Our top tips and resources for learning from home with Primary children.

Has your child got an ear for music?

Music is a fantastic tool of self-expression for children, as well as being incredibly fun! The rewards from living a musical life are numerous – did you know that singing has been scientifically proven to make you happier? The act of singing releases powerful, feel-good endorphins! And if singing’s not for you…

Here are some musical activities you can try at home..!

DIY INSTRUMENTS!

Want to try something new? Create your own percussion instruments with household objects!

Try creating shakers, using pasta and rice in empty bottles, or fill them with different levels of water.

Add these, and upturned pots and pans, to your domestic orchestra!

CREATE A MUSICAL LANGUAGE!

To do so, you’ll need: sheets of paper, and coloured pens

Create symbols to stand for different sounds: for example, a star could mean ‘stomp your foot’, and a triangle ‘clap your hands’. Have your children create their own short pieces of music using these symbols, and then follow the music together, in a cacophony of sound!

MUSICAL HIDE AND SEEK!

This is a fun game to help develop children’s listening skills.

You’ll need: a toy or device that plays music.

This is hide and seek, but not as they know it! After hiding the object, have your child follow the sound to find its hiding place! Keep hiding the toy, and make it a little trickier each time.

WORK WITH A MUSIC TUTOR!

Our tutors have experience teaching almost every instrument under the sun – this could be the perfect time to encourage your children to start a new instrument, or learn more about music production, or musicals! Our tutors have been working online with a number of students in these subjects over the past few months, so why not try something new today?

LINK TO LIFE!
Here are some tips and ideas to integrate music into everyday activities!

Swap film night for Karaoke! Nothing but fun, all you need is a screen that plays YouTube songs, and willing participants. Why not dress up – throw on a glamorous feather boa and look like a musical diva, a country music cowboy hat, or a rock’n’roll pair of sunglasses to look the part too!
