Our Founder’s Story

How it All Started

When I started Enjoy Education in 2006, it was driven by personal experiences and a vision for the future of learning. My academic journey was far from smooth. Between the ages of 16 and 24, I faced several health challenges which kept me bed-bound for extended periods, including glandular fever during my lower sixth, a serious heart virus at Oxford, and two spinal accidents. These experiences fundamentally changed my understanding and experience of learning. Personalised tutoring helped me catch up academically and also instilled a belief in the transformative power of education when tailored to individual needs. This belief, forged from my own challenges and triumphs, led me to open the doors of Enjoy Education after graduating from Oxford.

During my A levels, my tutor’s belief in me was transformative. He provided the support and encouragement I needed at a turbulent time, restoring my confidence and enabling me to achieve my potential. In retrospect, I realise the value in tutoring isn’t just about overcoming challenges; it’s about building life skills which allow you to thrive despite life’s setbacks. My original mentor remains an influential figure in my life. We have stayed in touch, and I continue to seek his advice and guidance.

This profoundly empowering experience remains at the heart of Enjoy Education, stoking my desire to provide an environment where every student receives the tailored, compassionate support they need to thrive. My goal remains to ensure that every student can face their educational challenges armed with the necessary support team, just as I had once benefitted from a guiding hand.

As the educational world evolves, the bespoke approach we champion at Enjoy Education is essential. In an era where grades are often seen as the sole measure of success, we go beyond these traditional metrics. Our students are individuals, each with unique potential and challenges. We strive to understand and inspire them, not just teach them.

When I established Enjoy Education, my vision was to create something unparalleled in the industry, akin to Savile Row. Just as customers require expert tailoring, our students’ needs and goals are our top priority. Our bespoke approach is especially powerful in our home-schooling service, where education is tailored to both academic needs and personal interests. One-to-one tuition offers additional benefits which goes beyond what mainstream schooling can provide. Personalised one to one learning enables students to progress at their own pace and the individual attention helps to address specific areas of need immediately, fostering confidence and encouraging active participation.

While grades are important, they do not come at the expense of cultivating lifelong, fulfilled learners who are passionate, engaged and able to apply their knowledge to the real world. At Enjoy Education, we believe in nurturing each student’s unique strengths and passions. It’s the attention to detail and the care of highly trained educators which reveal and foster these talents. Our success lies in bringing out the best in every student, ensuring they thrive in their own distinctive way.

The World as Our Classroom

At Enjoy Education, we know that learning extends far beyond the confines of the classroom. Travel and education are a powerful combination, offering students a broader stage on which to learn and grow. Experiencing new cultures and environments is invaluable, bringing lessons to life in a way traditional schooling often cannot.

I remember a student called Sophie, who struggled with history until a trip to Rome made the past come alive for her. Another student, James, discovered his passion for marine biology after a visit to the Great Barrier Reef – I recently received a message to say how he is now a researcher within the United Nations Environment Programme. Over the past 20 years, I’ve observed students return from trips, more engaged and with a deeper understanding of their place in the world. This holistic approach to education not only reduces exam anxiety, it also fosters a more measured perspective, fuelling learners who are passionate, engaged, and able to apply their knowledge to the real world. It’s this kind of exposure which empowers a student to thrive beyond school.

Looking Ahead

Reflecting on the past two decades, I am deeply grateful for the trust placed in us by our families. I am inspired by the dedication of our team and the successes of our students. The journey so far has been colourful – from advising government on their education policies, building bespoke schools in the Caribbean, collaborating with the world’s leading experts in educational psychology, our work is varied and deeply rooted in research and innovation. We’re always pushing the boundaries, seeking out the best approaches to education to bring this home to our students and I’m excited and hungry for decade number three!
