IB Results Day: What to Do if You Miss Your Target Grades - Clearing, Resits and Remarks

IB Results Day, Sunday 6 July 2025, arrives earlier than other exam boards, giving students a head start in decision-making. But what if the outcome isn’t what you hoped for? If your total points fall short of expectations, if your university place is no longer guaranteed, or if you’re simply unsure of what comes next, you are not alone.

1.  Start with a Clear Head

Disappointment is natural after two demanding years of IB study. But don’t rush to take action before looking at the full picture:

• Review your subject-level grades and core points
• Speak with your school’s IB coordinator or Head of Sixth Form
• Consider if any results seem out of line with predicted performance

Our team helps families interpret results clearly and calmly, and spot opportunities for intervention or improvement, whether academic or strategic.

2.  Could a Re-mark Change the Outcome?

If your results are lower than expected, your school may advise an Enquiry Upon Results (EUR) – the IB’s re-mark process.

• Requests must go through your IB school and come with a fee
• Grades can go up, down or stay the same
• It may only take one subject point to meet a university condition

3.  Missed Your Offer? Your Next Move Matters

If you don’t meet your university offer, there are still excellent options available, especially if you act early.

IB students and UCAS Clearing:

• Clearing opens on 5 July 2025, just before IB results are released
• IB students have a head start on A-Level students, whose results come out in August
• Top universities may list high-quality course places early, particularly in STEM, Business and Humanities

Because Clearing opens before A-Level results are released, IB students benefit from an early window to find places on competitive courses. Some top universities may already have Clearing places available, especially in the first few days after IB results are published.

However, it’s worth noting that additional places may only become available after A-Level results are published on 14 August. This gives IB students a two-stage advantage – an early opportunity to secure a place, and a second chance to revisit Clearing when more courses are released later in the summer.

4.  Resits Through Your School – What’s Possible?

If you want to improve your grades, IB resits are available in November 2025 (and again in May 2026), but:

• You must resit through your original IB school
• Not all schools offer every subject or component
• Coursework (e.g. IAs, Extended Essay) may not always be re-submitted
• University timelines vary. Some accept November results, others do not
