Ever wondered what it would be like to take on a Residential role?

2nd November, 2023

Our wonderful Residential Tutors work with families either at their homes or join them on their travels, bringing learning to life. From short-term local intensive roles to travelling the world over the course of a year, Residentials are a fantastic way to support your own learning as you teach! Our tutors have travelled and taught in the Caribbean, Costa Rica, the Mediterranean, Switzerland, France, the Middle East and India to name just a few locations.

Two of our current Residential tutors have shared their experiences and advice, so you can get a better understanding of what it means to take on one of these exciting roles.

One of our tutors who recently took on a Residential role within the UK:

My time with the residential client in the West Country was an amazing experience and I would recommend it to any tutor that would like an opportunity to go deeper into their practice of teaching, whilst being well remunerated for their time.

I was incredibly well looked after, comfortable and well fed throughout my stay. I took the work on as I saw the opportunity from Enjoy Education and it was near enough to where I live that it was worthwhile to spend a week with the family supporting their two children with upcoming 13+ examinations. It is definitely the kind of thing that I will be applying for again, as it is a great way to earn whilst being away. It was a pleasure to be around such wonderful people and even though I didn’t know the family before the residential, by the end I felt like I knew them really well and was able to provide the support that they needed from a tutor. Thank you Enjoy Education for providing me with such a great opportunity!

One of our brilliant international Residential tutors:

Taking on the role of a tutoring students abroad has been a remarkable and enriching experience. The decision to embark on this journey was motivated by a deep desire for personal and professional growth, a chance to explore new horizons, and a passion for cross-cultural education.

What initially drew me to this opportunity was the prospect of stepping out of my comfort zone and immersing myself in a completely different cultural context. The idea of broadening my own horizons while helping young minds navigate through the challenges of learning in a foreign environment was a compelling and exciting prospect.

For tutors considering similar roles abroad, I would offer the following advice:

Cultural Sensitivity: Approach the experience with an open mind and a deep respect for the cultural diversity of your students. Embrace the opportunity to learn from their unique perspectives.

Effective Communication: Clear and effective communication is paramount. Language barriers may exist, so ensure your teaching methods are easily understandable, and be patient in addressing any language-related challenges.

Adaptability: Be adaptable and flexible in your teaching methods. What works in one cultural context may require adjustments in another, so be ready to tailor your approach to the students’ needs.

Building Relationships: Take the time to build strong, positive relationships with your students. These connections can greatly enhance the learning experience and help students feel more comfortable in their new educational environment.

Continuous Learning: Keep an open mind and stay eager to learn from your students and their culture. Continuously seek to enhance your understanding of different cultural perspectives, educational methods, and adapt your teaching strategies accordingly. Stay curious and open to new ideas to enrich your tutoring experience abroad.

In summary, tutoring students abroad is an adventure in personal and professional growth. It’s an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young learners while simultaneously gaining a broader understanding of the world.
