How is a bespoke homeschooling programme designed?
Once we have a clear picture of the student, we begin building the programme. There is no standard Enjoy timetable.
A programme might include:
Some students need a full academic week. Others may begin with a lighter timetable and build gradually.
The balance can also be very different from school. One-to-one teaching is focused, so students do not necessarily need to spend the same number of hours in formal lessons to make meaningful progress.
How do you choose the right tutors?
Tutor matching is the most important part of the process. Subject knowledge and academic background matter, but they are only part of the picture. We also think about personality, teaching style, confidence, learning needs and the type of relationship that is likely to bring out the best in the student.
That might mean prioritising a tutor with particular SEN experience, expertise in a specific exam board, a very nurturing manner or a more direct and stretching approach. The match is shaped around what will help that student feel comfortable, engaged and able to make progress.
The aim is not simply to find someone who can teach the subject. It is to find someone who can teach that student.
What happens before the first lesson?
Once the programme begins to take shape, we coordinate the practical side too.
That can include agreeing first lesson times, designing the timetable balance, confirming whether sessions will be online or in person, sharing relevant academic information and making sure everyone understands the priorities for the programme.
For some students, we will also arrange a tutor pre-meet before teaching begins. This can be especially helpful for students who are anxious about change, need time to build trust, or simply benefit from meeting the person first without the pressure of starting a lesson straight away. It gives the student and tutor a chance to get to know each other, ask questions and make that first proper session feel much more comfortable.
For families who have been managing a difficult school situation, this part can feel especially important. Where appropriate, we can also liaise with the school directly to support a smooth handover, helping us understand what has been covered, what support has already been in place and where the priorities need to be from the outset.
You are not expected to find individual tutors, coordinate everyone yourself and somehow turn that into a coherent education. We manage the moving parts with you.
What does the first month of homeschooling usually look like?
The first few weeks are often about settling in as much as academics. Tutors are getting to know the student. The student is adjusting to a different way of learning. We are beginning to see which parts of the timetable work well and where something may need to change.
That might mean adjusting the pace of a subject, moving a lesson to a different time, changing the balance between tuition and independent work, or adding more support in a particular area. A bespoke programme should become more personalised as we learn more about the student.
We would not expect everything to be fixed on day one.
Who keeps the programme joined up?
This is one of the biggest differences between arranging a few tutors independently and having a managed homeschooling programme. Someone is always looking at the whole picture.
Every family has a dedicated Enjoy Programme Manager who provides overall oversight of the programme, keeps communication joined up and makes sure the right support is in place as things develop.
The Lead Tutor is much more involved in the day-to-day academic picture. They have regular contact with the student, help coordinate the tutor team and flag where something may need to change.
There is also oversight from an Academic Director, who helps review progress, academic goals and the overall direction of the programme. If a student has additional learning needs, a SENCO can also be involved to help shape the right support and make sure the team is working from a shared understanding of the student.
It means parents are not left trying to coordinate several different teachers, timetables and priorities themselves. The programme should feel like one coherent education, not a collection of separate lessons.
What happens if something is not working?
We change it. That might sound obvious, but it is an important part of personalised education.
A tutor match may not feel quite right. A student may need more support in one subject and less in another. Their confidence may improve and they may be ready for more challenge. Health, family circumstances or future plans may change.
How quickly can a homeschooling programme start?
That depends on the student and the complexity of the programme. Some families contact us months in advance. Others need help quickly because a child has suddenly stopped attending school or circumstances have changed.
Where there is urgency, we can often begin with the most important areas first and build out the programme as the right tutors are identified.
Can the programme change over time?
Yes. A bespoke homeschooling programme should be able to evolve as the student does.
That might mean:
- increasing or reducing the number of lessons
- changing subjects or exam choices
- adding more stretch in an area where a student is progressing quickly
- introducing new interests or extracurricular learning
- bringing in additional SEN or mentoring support
- preparing for a return to school or Sixth Form
- adapting around changes in health, confidence or family circumstances
Homeschooling does not have to mean committing to one route forever. The programme can change as the student’s needs, ambitions and circumstances change.
What is the first step?
The first step is simply a conversation. You do not need to know exactly what subjects your child should take, how many hours they should study or which tutors they need.
We can help you work through those decisions.
